IPPRO student writers’ camp, held
The Institutional Planning and Public Relation Office (IPPRO) held a two-day training camp in campus journalism for student writers on October 6-7, 2009 at the University’s Hotel and Restaurant Management and Training Center in Lingayen.
Anchored on the theme “Campus Journalism: Invigorating the True Essence of a Genuine Democracyâ€, the training was participated in by staff members and advisers of the campus papers from the Lingayen, Bayambang, Urdaneta, Sta. Maria, Asingan, San Carlos City, Infanta, Binmaley, and Alaminos City campuses.
With IPPRO Director Leticia Ursua at the helm, the Training was organized to equip the campus journalists with skills and techniques that would help them develp their talents in writing and compete in different categories at press conferences. Notable journalists and media practitioners of the province were invited as resource speakers. Topics which were discussed include “News Writing and News Reporting in the IT Ageâ€, “Democracy, Freedom of the Press and Censorship and Opinion Writingâ€, “All About Editorialsâ€, “Sports Journalism†and “Writing Featuresâ€.
The election of the new set of officers for the PSU Editors’ Guild was also undertaken during the first day of the training camp. Mr. Franklin V. Fernandez of PSU Bayambang was the duly elected president. Rachel Dawn Mislang of PSU Lingayen and Kayssy Sebastian of PSU San Carlos were elected as vice presidents. Moreover, Madel Damasco and Didy Cabangon of Binmaley Campus held the positions of secretary and treasurer, respectively. For the position of auditor, Jennifer Agbuya of San Carlos was elected while Berliese Frias of Bayambang Campus and April Catabay of Alaminos Campus got the post of public relations officers. Finally, Wilhelm Razon from Alaminos Campus landed as business manager. Right after the election, they were sworn into office by PSU President Victoriano C. Estira.
The participants also enjoyed a night of games and presentations from the different campuses in a simple socialization party which enabled them to gain new friends and keep up with old ones. In the closing program wherein they were encouraged to give their impressions regarding the conduct of the said training camp, the student writers articulated their gratitude for such activity which helped them to become more confident writers with their newfound knowledge.
